New Journal Publication: AR and ML Solutions for Facial Expression Recognition on Mobile Phones

Our paper comparing Augmented Reality and Machine Learning approaches to real-time facial expression recognition on smartphones has been published in the Celal Bayar University Journal of Science.

We are pleased to announce that PerSystLab researchers Burcu Selçuk and Tacha Serif have published their latest research paper, “AR and ML Solutions for Facial Expression Recognition on Mobile Phones”, in the Celal Bayar University Journal of Science.

Facial expression recognition is becoming increasingly important in human-computer interaction, mobile healthcare, assistive technologies, and intelligent user interfaces. In this work, the authors investigate how Augmented Reality (AR) and Machine Learning (ML) can be effectively integrated on modern smartphones to perform real-time facial expression recognition while delivering an interactive and responsive user experience.

The proposed solution combines lightweight machine learning models with mobile AR technologies to recognize facial expressions directly on consumer smartphones. By leveraging on-device processing, the approach enables accurate emotion recognition while remaining suitable for real-time mobile deployment. The study demonstrates the potential of combining mobile AI, computer vision, and augmented reality to support next-generation intelligent applications that can understand and respond to users’ emotional states.
